Boards:In setting the boards 646 hand-forged iron rivets, copied from archeological finds, have been used. To prevent the rivets from rusting, they have been dipped in tar while still glowing. Planks are slowly grown spruce. Ribs:Naturally bow-grown pines and root-sections. Keel:A 21 feet (app. 7m) long T – shaped pine-keel. Rigging:-Mast: Spruce 7,5m / 24.6 ft. Ballast:600-1000 kg/ 1300-2200 pounds (lb) natural stones. Deplacement:3,5 tons/ 7700 pounds approx. Wood protection:Pure, partly self-produced natural tar. Steering oar:The steering oar is attached with a line trough the board on the starboard-.side. The term ”starboard” originate from the old norse word ”Styrbord” (styra + bord), the board on which you steer. Help-engine:5 pair of oars powered by a varying quality of manpower (occasionally also raw womanpower) burning mainly herring and beer in quantities depending heavily on weather conditions. Crew:7 - 15 persons. |
